Jianzi / Dacau is played competitively in a similar way to Badminton. (These rules are based on the Shuttlecock Federation of Europes' guidelines)
Faults: A fault occurs when a team cannot return the Jianzi, or hits the Jianzi out of the court or into the net. If a player uses their arm or hand to hit the Jianzi, this is also a fault. If a player touches the net during play a fault occurs.
Sets: When a team reaches 21 points with at least a 2 point advantage, the team wins the set. If scores are 20:20, play continues until one team wins two consecutive points.
Service: When a team wins a point, they win service. If scores get to 20:20, teams take it in turns to serve.
Hits: Each player may hit the Jianzi twice in a row. A team can collectively hit the Jianzi four times.
Serving: The serving player should stand in the serving area (see court pic [coming soon]). The Jianzi is dropped from the hand and kicked over the net into the opponent’s area. The server cannot enter the court until the Jianzi has been served.
Service Fault: When server steps on the court line or into the court, if the Jianzi fails to cross the net, Jianzi hits one of the server’s team mates on the way over the net, Jianzi lands outside of the court
Let: When the Jianzi hits the net but still passes over into the opposing area on serving, if the Jianzi becomes damaged during a rally
Court Dimensions: Rectangular, 6.10m wide x 11.88m long. 2m free space around court perimeter. 6m clear head room above court.
Boundary lines: Lines must be clear and 4cm in width. Lines are drawn within the above mentioned court dimensions
Serving area: Serving areas are behind the end line of the courts as indicated in the court pic (coming soon)
Net size: 7m long, 76cm wide, with holes of 2cm squared, hung between two poles located 50cm outside the court on both sides. The top of the net should be 1.60m for men and 1.50m for women.
